Child and Adolescent Psychiatry

Child and Adolescent Psychiatry will provide leadership in the field of child and adolescent mental health by integrating research, clinical practice, and teaching. The Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Centre specializes in the diagnosis and the treatment of disorders of emotion, cognition and/or behavior affecting children from infancy to age 18 years.

Clinical Services

Once a child or adolescent is accepted for services, a diagnostic assessment is conducted in order to understand that child’s strengths and areas of concern. Recommendations are carefully reviewed with the parent/legal guardian and the child. Recommendations may include one or more of the following services: Individual, family, group or medical therapy, parent consultation, school consultation, and/or psychological testing.

Services are selected to address specific treatment goals. Progress towards these goals are monitored closely and discussed with the parents or legal guardians. Our mental health specialists are committed to providing the highest quality of care to each child and family. We work closely with the child and their family, primary care provider, school personnel, and others to ensure that assessment and treatment are clinically appropriate and comprehensive.

Based on this, a plan is formulated for continued treatment, supported by the patient, family and referring professionals.

Older adults have special physical, emotional, and social needs. Understanding this, the geriatric psychiatrist takes a comprehensive approach to diagnosis and treatment, including listening and responding to the concerns of the older adult, helping families, and when necessary, working with other health care professionals to develop effective approaches to treatment. Co-existing medical illnesses, medications, family issues, social concerns, and environmental issues are integrated into a comprehensive program of care.

Memory clinics, otherwise known as dementia diagnostic clinics, are staffed by providers who are well-informed in the diagnosis and treatment of dementia and Alzheimer's disease. Many things can cause dementia, a decline in intellectual ability severe enough to interfere with a person's daily routine. Dementias related to depression, drug interaction and thyroid problems may be reversible if detected early. Other causes of dementia include strokes, Huntington's disease, Parkinson's disease and Pick's disease. Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of dementia. It is important to identify the actual cause in order for the individual to receive proper care.

ABA (Applied behavior analysis) Therapy
Behavior analysis focuses on the principles that explain how learning takes place. Positive reinforcement is one such principle. When a behavior is followed by some sort of reward, the behavior is more likely to be repeated. Through decades of research, the field of behavior analysis has developed many techniques for increasing useful behaviors and reducing those that may cause harm or interfere with learning. Applied behavior analysis (ABA) is the use of these techniques and principles to bring about meaningful and positive change in behavior.

The spectrum of psychotic disorders includes schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, delusional disorder, schizotypal personality disorder, schizophreniform disorder, brief psychotic disorder, as well as psychosis associated with substance use or medical conditions.
Biopolar Disorders
Bipolar disorder, previously known as manic depression, is a mental disorder that causes periods of depression and periods of elevated mood. The elevated mood is significant and is known as mania or hypomania, depending on its severity, or whether symptoms of psychosis are present. During mania, an individual behaves or feels abnormally energetic, happy, or irritable. Individuals often make poorly thought out decisions with little regard to the consequences.
Major Depression
Major depressive disorder (MDD), also known simply as depression, is a mental disorder characterized by at least two weeks of low mood that is present across most situations. It is often accompanied by low self-esteem, loss of interest in normally enjoyable activities, low energy, and pain without a clear cause.People may also occasionally have false beliefs or see or hear things that others cannot. Some people have periods of depression separated by years in which they are normal while others nearly always have symptoms present.[3] Major depressive disorder can negatively affect a person's personal, work, or school life, as well as sleeping, eating habits, and general health.
